Homeowners Claim? What to do.....

If your home is damaged for example by a storm or fire, you'll be overwhelmed with stress and probably won't know what to do first? Here are the things you need to do to help put your home back whole again:

  • Call your agent or insurance carrier's claim office to report the loss.
  • If a theft is involved, report it to the police.
  • If the loss involves the theft of a credit card, report it to your credit card company.
  • Protect your property from further damage, such as arranging for a tarp if the roof is leaking. Make reasonable repairs to doors and windows to protect the home from entry. Keep record of your expenditures for these repairs and present it to the claim adjuster.
  • Separate damaged and undamaged personal property, making a detailed list of the damaged or stolen items for the adjuster (show quantity, cost, actual cash value and the amount of loss you are claiming.
  • Keep receipts for any living costs incurred if you are forced to live somewhere else while repairs are done.
Obviously, you're not going to be able to remember everything on this list if your home is destroyed. The main thing to remember is to report the loss to your agent, who will be able to walk you through the process and help you through this very difficult time.
